Lesson One Reflection

Today I taught my first lesson and I have to say that it went really well. I even got a compliment from my teacher after. In this lesson I was teaching the students about main idea. When I first mentioned it the students looked a little confused. Then once I told them it was the main idea or the big idea of a story they seem to understand it a bit more.I know the more we talk about it the better their understanding will be and the easier it will be to find it when reading stories. I also used some of the previous books we had read in the class to talk about main idea. I asked the students to tell me what the main idea of those stories was and how did we know that. This seem to really help them because it was bringing in knowledge they already had. I also used a short story from the book, that I modeled how I might find the main idea of a story. We then talked about how the main ideas are not just in books but there is a big idea or a main idea to everything we do. I think the connecting it the students life really helped them grasp the concept better. As I go through this week, I will be bring main idea up again. This way they will continue to work with it and get better at finding it when they read. The one thing I would change is getting the book sooner. I went to the library to get my book I had chosen to use instead of the story from reading street but the library was closed. That was totally my fault but I know for next time to go early to the library.  Overall like I said, my lesson went really well and I am very happy with it.
