My
lesson fit right in with my curriculum. That was how I had planned my lesson to
go. Our reading lesson is so hard to veer from that I didn't have much choice.
Also my MT goes very much by Reading Street. I have to say there is not a lot of freedom
when it comes to Reading Street. There are not a lot of places to go in a
different direction or use a different type of teaching style. I know we did
this a couple of times when we did not use Reading Street for the day and it
went well. When it was less structured and more center work the kids did great.
They enjoyed what we were doing and there was also less behavior things we had
to deal with. I did however try to break away from Reading Street comprehension
on Thursday because I feel that even at this point in the school year they are
getting tired and bored with Reading Street. This helps it not seem so repetitive and
boring to the kids.
The
way Reading Street is structured did help me get to work on core practice better
because there is a lot of whole group work. This allowed me to work on guided
interactive discussions with the whole class. The students were also able to
get use to the whole class doing this so that in the future they will be ready.
I also think it helped the students because they were able to learn from more
of their classmates. I know that Reading Street helped me plan my lesson but I
also feel that the set up also hinders what we can do in the classroom.
My
lessons went really well. The kids did really well with them. I think the only
thing I would really change about them is get away a little more from Reading
Street. Now that I have seen my class in a setting where Reading Street is not
the main thing, I think it might be better for my class to do other activities.
I would probably have more of a short lesson and then have them work in centers
and have one of their centers be with me as well. This I would like to apply
when I am in lead teaching. I hope it goes well but still nervous to try it.
I
think the best thing I can learn to help me progress in teaching literacy is
more fun ways to do it. I know reading programs are a big thing to use right
now and sometimes they do really well and other times they don’t. I just want to
the most or the best information I can to have my kids learn literacy in the
best and most fun way possible. I also want to learn more ways to teach about
guide interactive discussion. I know there are plenty of times you can do it as
a whole group but I would like to learn ways to teach it in small groups so
that I can do the center idea. I also would like to find fun ways for the kids
to do it in groups that might be more student lead then teacher lead. I would
need to learn the best way to do this and what areas of literacy would go best
with this type of learning.
