Lesson Two Reflection

Today my students’ did a much better job indentifying high frequency words (come, way, in, on, and my). However, some of my students are still struggling to indentify the word “way” and use it in a sentence. Also some of my students struggled to put the word in, into a sentence. They tended to make into a compound word (inside) within the sentence. My students struggled with the idea of words for locations at first however, picked it right up once I started making a graphic organizer and gave them a couple of prompts. They excelled with the main section story for the week. My lower students were able to read and partake in the conversation a little more than normal after previewing the main selection before the rest of the class. They were able to read the high frequency words with ease along with the words with the –ck ending (our focus blend for the week). They also were able to answer questions about the selection completely and with good detail. If I was to teach this lesson again I would change the way I did the brain storming about cats before the main selection. I would have students brainstorm in pairs or small groups instead of whole group because my students were very excited to share out their ideas. I made sure that they were all able to get at least one turn to share out however, many of them wanted to share three or four things and by having them do this in pairs or small groups they could share out many things. I will re-teach the exact same thing as I did before so they will be hearing the same lesson twice in hopes they will retain it. Also I will rephrase something’s into more simple ways within the lesson to ensure their understanding. My core practice focuses on high frequency, academic, and sight words as vocabulary so I was somewhat surprised when I was able to use academic vocabulary (opposite, right, left) that they has not be explicitly taught and they were able to apply it to respond to me. This was the second day of the high frequency words my, come, way, in, and on for my students and I was impressed how much growth they had made since day one with the words. I attribute this the repetition of the high frequency words that Reading Street provides and that I have extend on. To continue my professional learning about vocabulary I want to find ways to provide repetition but in different ways because Reading Street tends to repeat in the same ways all the time, however I’m not sure if this is proven method for vocabulary acquisition.
